Dogs and cats may be the most popular pets in the United States, but they are certainly not the only ones. At our veterinarian’s office in Naples, we specialize in taking care of the more uncommon but equally loved pets with exotic pet care.
What are Exotic Pets
Exotic pets are considered those pets that are more unusual to keep and those pets that are thought of more generally (but not always) as wild animal species and not everyday pets. Below are a few examples of the types of exotic pets that we treat at All Creatures Animal Hospital:
- Birds. Here in Naples, thanks to our warm, subtropical climate, we see all species of birds ranging from the more common lovebirds to larger breeds like macaws and cockatoos.
- Small Mammals. Also sometimes referred to as "pocket pets", small mammals like sugar gliders, guinea pigs, ferrets, hedgehogs, rats, and others are considered exotic pets. Small mammals require specialized medical care that only a veterinarian who routinely works with such pets can provide.
- Reptiles & Amphibians. Our warmer and more humid environment is also ideal for the raising and caring of various reptiles and amphibians like chameleons, bearded dragons, turtles, and non-venomous snakes.
- Fish. Fish are also considered a type of exotic pet but, unfortunately, they are not one we readily accept as pet clients. We can, however, offer basic care and general diagnostics and can refer you to a more specialized professional if you need further assistance.
If you're still not sure whether or not your pet is an exotic pet, then follow the rule of the home environment. In general, exotic pets will require some type of specialized enclosure or environment for them to be safe and healthy. For example, reptiles will need sunning stones and heat to ensure they can regulate their body temperatures while hamsters will require toys and exercise wheels to stay mentally and emotionally stimulated.
What is Exotic Pet Care
Exotic pets are just like any other pet in that they have certain dietary and medical requirements that need to be met to stay in good health and enjoy a prolonged life. Because we specialize in exotic pet care, we have the experience and the tools to offer guidance, diagnostics, and medical attention. For example, for exotic pets, we offer annual wellness exams, dental care, medical diagnostics, nutritional advice, and many other veterinary services.
